Ed Curran is Shooting Video of CES on His iPhone with an OWLE

Reporter Ed Curran - who works for a CBC affiliate in Chicago - is at CES and he’s doing all his video shooting and editing on his iPhone with the help of the OWLE (Optical Widget for Life Enhancement) Bubo (previously covered here and here on SoloJourno.com).

While an iPhone is no substitute for a professional video rig, when it’s equipped with the OWLE (for improved stabilization, ability to add external mics/lenses/lights), video from it is ‘good enough’ for TV, and of course, more than good enough for the web.

On his techblog, Curran said:

The OWLE (Optical Widget For Life Enhancement) Bubo is a hefty aluminum holder for the iPhone. The sturdy grip allows me to get a better grasp on my iPhone for steadier shots when shooting photos or video. On the front is a wide angle lens that enhances the iPhone’s images and gathers a little more light. There’s also a small microphone that helps pickup sound more efficiently than the iPhone’s built-in mic that faces the wrong way for shooting video and there are numerous options for mounting aditional accessories. I’ve even equipped my OWLE with a special hand-built adapter that lets me use my good old wireless microphone and I’ve also mounted an inexpensive LED light on the top. It’s funny, I’ve covered CES with $100,000 in equipment and now I’m following it with my cell phone!

Slate.com - The Tablet Hype: They Can’t Possibly Save Magazines and Newspapers.

Via Slate.com:

Sports Illustrated dazzled the technorati and knuckle-draggers alike earlier this month [December 2009] with a demo of a digital tablet prototype of the magazine promised for 2010. Radiating a wow-factor equal to some of the media gadgets in Steven Spielberg’s Minority Report, the SI demo promises full-motion video, lightning-quick screen refreshes as you flick from page to page, and the power to customize the device per your preferences.

Time Inc., which owns Sports Illustrated, isn’t the only publisher making digital reader noise. Engadget wrote about a similar, though less-polished demo of Condé Nast’s Wired; the Hearst Corp. plans to start an online magazine and newspaper service in 2010 called Skiff, which will include a dedicated Skiff e-reader; and other newspaper and magazine companies are jumping into the mix.

Meanwhile, GQ and Esquire are releasing paid iPhone editions, the Kindle has new digital competition from Barnes & Noble’s Nook, and folks can’t stop talking about the much-rumored but unannounced revolutionary Apple tablet.

Digital Magazines: Bonnier Mag+ Prototype

This video from Bonnier R&D illustrates a concept/prototype and “is a corporate collaborative research project initiated by Bonnier R&D into the experience of reading magazines on handheld digital devices. It illustrates one possible vision for digital magazines in the near future, presented by our design partners at BERG.”

The concept aims to capture the essence of magazine reading, which people have been enjoying for decades: an engaging and unique reading experience in which high-quality writing and stunning imagery build up immersive stories.

The concept uses the power of digital media to create a rich and meaningful experience, while maintaining the relaxed and curated features of printed magazines. It has been designed for a world in which interactivity, abundant information and unlimited options could be perceived as intrusive and overwhelming.

The purpose of publishing this concept video is first and foremost to spark a discussion around the digital reading experience in general, and digital reading platforms in particular. Thus, we would be more than happy to hear what you have to say regarding the concept and ideas expressed in the video: the magazine reading experience, digital browsing, text versus images, as well as hear about your own digital reading experiences and thoughts. We are all ears.

Follow the discussion on twitter or their blog. Photos and screenshots are available on Flickr and are downloadable in a zip-file (23MB).
